ABOUT ROBERT
As a child, Robert wanted to be a pilot or an architect. Excelling in classes that interested him, such as History, Physics, Photography, and Filmmaking, he squeaked by in the classes that didn’t pique his curiosity. He spent most of his time drawing and designing in those less interesting subjects, and in his senior year took an architectural design and drafting class where his career path became focused on architecture and flying was relegated to an interest.
As a part time college student, Robert worked at a firm running a blueprint machine, and a drafting board was made available to him by the architects for his schoolwork, provided he kept up with his printing responsibilities. In short order, the firm offered him work as a drafter, which quickly led to his promotion to the design department, where he was given the freedom to design smaller projects.
Seven years at a firm in Florida, followed by 8 years with a national Architecture and Engineering Firm in New Hampshire, gave him extensive experience in large commercial design, setting the foundation for his career, despite wanting to design residential projects.
A passion for all things outdoors, and an opportunity to work on both commercial and residential architecture led him to Montana where he could, in addition to architecture, pursue skiing, fly fishing, camping, and horse riding. Spending 9 years as an office manager and lead designer at a well-known residential design firm, Robert honed his residential skills and appreciated the architectural language and style of the principal. It was during this time that Robert met his future business partner, Michael, whom he hired as a young architect.
Having been raised on the East Coast, Robert was exposed to a wide range of architectural styles. Feeling constrained by the firm’s design limitations and wanting to explore a more diverse scope of work, he made the decision to create something of his own. This led to the formation of Stillwater Architecture in 2003, with the goal of embracing more and different styles of architectural design, provided they were appropriate for the given site, climate, and clients’ desires.
Over the past 23 years, Robert has focused on building a nimble, responsive, client focused firm that prioritizes clients’ goals over architectural ego to produce unique and distinctive designs that represent each owner’s personality.
